The week started with Techcrunch Disrupt at NYC. Thanks to the technology - there was live streaming of all sessions. I particularly enjoyed the interview with John Doerr, the venture capitalist. He was very cautious not to make any predictions whether social networking will be dominated by one or many companies. The interview with Yuri Milner was not that inspiring since he chose to be a little reticent in expressing his views on where technology is heading.
Jack Dorsey's demo of his new startup "square" was pretty neat. He also shared very good tips for newbie entrepreneurs on raising money. The debate between Fred Wilson and Ben Horowitz on lean versus fat startup was interesting but it is no surprise that audience went with the lean idea. I think Ben picked a wrong word, "fat", to explain how some companies would need more capital injection at the early stage than others. Nobody likes to be fat may be he should have said "smart" or "trim" startups.
Five hundred miles away from New York, the Detroit city hosted another ambitious conference called "fasttrac to the future". The goal of the conference is empowering the entrepreneurial community in Michigan. The talk by Dr Janice Presser, CEO of the Gabriel institute, was the most interesting. With humor and compassion, she explained the concept of Role Based Assessment for making hiring decisions.
Finally, I found Gigaom's interview with Brad Feld just fascinating. This guy knows a few things about technology, entrepreneurship and career. There is also a lot of good stuff in his blog - something I need to check out later.
